Dik Guerts DG Ivar 5kW+ Stove - Control Yourself

Leg and log store options
5 items left

One control lever. No fuss. Perfect.

Whereas many stoves have two or even three controls, the Ivar 5 has just the one. It slides smoothly from left to right over a distance of exactly 192mm (about 172mm more than most other stoves).  That 192mm of travel is a journey, a display of just what can be achieved when fire and Dutch design skills combine. Every mm of the journey is a joy - slide a little, then slide a little more: fire becomes art. Should you get to see the Ivar 5 in action - then you will understand.

One lever only. Slide left to reduce heat and preserve logs, slide right to increase heat. Airwash, to keep the glass completely clear, is adjusted automatically.  Simple.

You are in control.

A challenge: take a trip to your local stove showroom and play with the controls on different stove brands. Some will have just 10 or 15mm of play, between "flames almost out" and "a fully roaring fire". It is hard to set the perfect temperature with such poor design, especially when wearing thick fireproof mitten. Controls may also be "scratchy" -  an unsatisfying metal on metal experience. Some stoves have three different controls (to control air entering three different areas within the stove). Now that is a faff.

Too expensive? We appreciate that it is more than some other stoves. If you can stretch to it then it really is worth it. A stove will often be the central focus of a room and you will likely find yourself staring at it more than the tv. A good stove brings warmth and joy to a home. The Ivar 5 is made in Holland, not China.

The Ivar 5 has a cast iron door and a steel body. The glass is infrared Chalcogenide which apparently is a very good thing (something to do with transmitting heat and not scratching when being cleaned).

Launched 2014 the Ivar 5 swiftly rose to become one of the top three sellers for Stovefitter's - and deservedly so. The excellent sales happened despite stiff competition from the sub £500 models.

Julian, (author of The Stove Fitter's Manual) has installed the 5kW Ivar in his Cornish cottage renovation (so ask him if you speak to him ;-). His immediate neighbour was so impressed that he chose the 8kW Ivar (on a log store) and the neighbour the other side also fitted the DG Ivar 5. So three in a row! No stopping word of mouth now - the owners of the village hotel & pub (Marazion Hotel, Cornwall) visited and were also impressed - they removed their recently installed inset stove (not enough heat) and fitted an Ivar 5 and are now happy as hotel owners in a hotel.

The Ivar is a modern, premium steel stove with a humongous viewing glass and firebox. For those desiring a modern appliance that can pump out 3-7.5kW if required, we recommend the Ivar 5. We like the name as well. Ivar is Nordic and sounds cool. Perhaps if I have a kid, I'll call it Ivar. What? I've left it too late? I'm only 54. Okay, a dog then.

The DG Ivar stove has a distance to combustibles (rear of the appliance) of 400mm but adding a heat shield directly to the back reduces this to 150mm.

Note from Julian: Because I sing their praises I get asked if I have any affiliation with DG. I do not. I spotted their stoves in 2014 at the Hearth and Home Show, Harrogate, and have been a dealer ever since. I have no relationship with DG aside from retailing their stoves and get no preferential treatment or trade discounts.

Great service and great product.

We ordered two Dik Guerts DG Ivar 5kW+ Ecodesign Wood Burning / Multi Fuel Stoves a few weeks ago and they meet all expectations. They are a great product, perfect for what we needed. We also can't thank Julian enough, he was very helpful answering the many questions we had, helping us design the two different flues we needed - we wouldn't hesitate using Julian and The Stove Fitter's Warehouse again.

Ivor 8kw Dik Guerts

This stove comes with one of the biggest viewing windows we could find for a multifuel stove. That was the main attraction for us & I don't regret it.
Other great features include the handle, which can be taken off to prevent it getting to hot to handle!
There is a little thing at the external side which internally rotates part of the grate to allow ash to fall into the tray.
We've bought it on a log store which means when sitting, the fire is at eyelevel. Airflow adjustment has immediate on the fire, it's cool.
We love this stove!

DG Ivar 5

After loads of research I decided on the DG Ivar 5 stove and loads more research later I went for the stove fitters warehouse. Delighted with both choices. The stove has a huge window and still gives plenty of heat. Delivery was very rapid and exactly as promised. Top marks!

Review of Aste (same chassis as Ivar but more traditional styling)

DIY install of a DG Aste: we are thrilled. Kitchen open to dining room - volume 66 cu, old house. Outside temp of 4 deg C both rooms up to 22 deg C, average one 1 kg wood log per hour, lever set to 2/3, central heating off. Stove draws well - no blow back or smell of smoke. Large glass - great. Lever control quickly adjusts, from a few flickering flames to full roar and no need for glove to adjust. Logs burn at a rate which is slower (about 1/3) and the heat output is much higher (about x 3) than open fire in previous house. Heat permeates to bedroom above. Before work I light the stove, have a shower, & down to breakfast in a warm room before leaving at 0600. 2 hrs later my wife is up & just needs to put a log on; perfect. Log length of 8-9 inches recommended: logs can be placed aligned front to rear - do not roll against the glass and soot it up. Sweep flue pipe via fire easy. Stovefitters Manual comprehensive and helpful. Delivery from Stovefitters prompt. Emails answered within 48 hours. Support good. All enabled a DIY installation to be undertaken without difficulty. A 6" flue pipe (9m) installed by pulling up from the chimney pot with a rope: remarkably easily. Downwards would have been tricky. Liner not insulated. Stove stepped out into the room by 10 cm using 2x 30 degree elbows to maximise heat output to room. We now know that stoves need drier wood than an open fire to avoid glass smoking up and for the wood to burn well. Estimated heat radiation using the back of a hand as a thermometer is 36 % front glass, 20 % sides, 16 % top, 8% rear, 4 % base & at best guess, 16 % up the chimney. Ash tray 3/4 full after approx 80 hours of burning. My wife initially cautious about me doing a DIY install; we got quotes from 3 local fitters and looked at different review sites. DIY installation: we both agree the right decision. Aste rather than Ivar? Traditional look and the internal mechanics of the two are identical. Thank you Julian, Arran, Emma and Reg.

DG Ivar 5

DG Ivar 5, with fitting pack FP2 with 30 degree elbows. Silvacore 904 flue and stainless cowl. Slate hearth is refurbished 35mm snooker table slate 'floating' on 15mm mortar base. Mantle and corbels a diy effort from scrap timber. Needless to say we are very happy with the installation. I found Julian's online manual invaluable for a diy installation. The stove is excellent and of very good quality, so easy to control too. All materials supplied are also very good indeed. So all all round we couldn't be happier!
