Smashing Stove

The Hobbit really is the perfect stove! It sits in the corner of my timber garden office and warms it beautifully. The office is insulated, but still very chilly on a morning, but I light the stove and by the time I put the kettle on and make a cuppa the temperature has already started to rise. It’s so cute too. The fact that you can see the flames which is unusual on such a small stove, is a real bonus. The staff at Stovefitters Warehouse have been excellent from the moment I placed my order. Within hours I had a text to arrange delivery and it arrived just as arranged. Brilliant customer service in an age where such service seems a distant memory. I couldn’t be any happier! Thank you

Beautiful Stove and Excellent Service

We bought the Hobbit stove for our Narrowboat, it’s such a beautiful and well made stove.
We were originally going to order something a little cheaper, but we are so glad we bought this one.
The quality is fantastic, we are yet to fit it so haven’t had it burning yet, but it’s the perfect size for our 40ft Narrowboat.
The delivery was very quick and came packaged extremely well. We we’re kept up to date with the delivery. Definitely recommend

About the Salamander Hobbit

So cute! The Salamander Hobbit small log burner is a traditional, petite cast-iron stove and probably the most famous small, multifuel stove on the market. During late 2015 the Hobbit was featured on George Clarke's Amazing Spaces, this causing a sales spike and a prolonged national Hobbit shortage. The small stove community still speak of this shortage today and many within that community are still having counselling today.

Salamander Stoves, in Devon, manufacture the small Hobbit stove (nice couple- Gillan and Mark, slightly eccentric but harmless). This one stove is pretty much all they do but they sell a lot. No wonder they know what they are doing. Niche marketing at its finest. A proper Hobbit obsession.
This is the perfect small wood burning stove for sheds, cabins, snugs, yurts, home offices, boats, caravans, vans, conservatories or any small room.
Hobbits are perfect for the smaller recess or the smaller room.
The Salamander Hobbit stove is a cast-iron classic and has long been a favourite amongst our customers. Over the years we have sold hundreds and we have very many happy customers.

Available with silver or brass fittings.
Standard or DEFRA-approved (for smoke control areas) versions available.
Requires you to also purchase a 4-5" vitreous adaptor to connect to a 5" stove pipe (see "Customers Who Bought This Also Bought"). This part does not come with our "Fitting Pack".

Hobbit Options

Options available:

Log store - fits under stove (see "Customers Also Bought").
Coal bar - raises the height at which coal/logs can fall out (see "Customers Also Bought").
Brass fittings - brass metalwork instead of silver (choose "Model" just above "Add to Cart").
Back boiler - factory-fitted option for heating small radiators approx. £225 extra. See Salamander website for more info.

Output & Fuel

Multifuel (can burn wood and smokeless fuel/coal)
Nominal 4kW.
Max. 3.4kW - 4kW

This stove will run happily at 1kW - 4kW depending on fuel load. Note that running the stove at a higher fuel level than that specified in the manufacturer's manual may cause degradation of stove innards (firebricks, baffle etc.) although these are replaceable (and repairable with beige fire cement).

What size stove do I need?

Eco Credentials

This stove is approved by DEFRA to burn wood in a Smoke Control Area

75% (as a rough guide 75% of heat goes to the room with 25% going up the chimney).

Don't overthink efficiency. 75%-85% is fine and90%+ efficiency may not work so well on shorter or difficult chimneys.

External Air

Yes, this stove can be fitted with an external air kit (draws air from outside via pipe direct to stove). Usually this option is not relevant unless a room air-vent is required and the property is airtight (by design or choice).

This is a factory-fitted option and a special order (approx. £250 extra). Please contact us for delivery timescales.

Body & Door

Cast-iron stove (5-year body guarantee) with cast-iron door.

What to buy steel or cast-iron? Do not overthink. Steel heats fast. Cast-iron takes a little longer but retains heat longer as fire dies.

Hearth thickness: minimum 12mm non-combustible material (can include floor thickness).

If in a fireplace recess, a full 125mm thickness constructional hearth is required. This will usually be in place as part of the recess design.

Height: 460mm
Height with log store: 618mm
Width: 300mm
Depth: 270mm
Front of pipe to rear of stove: 170mm

Flue outlet: 4" (100mm)

Which fitting pack for my liner? A fitting pack includes all you need except liner and chimney closure plate (also sometimes known as register plate)? Advice here

Viewing area (from outside stove looking in)

Width: 150mm
Height: 180mm

4" (100mm) collar top or rear. Can be installed with a 5" chimney liner on the DEFRA version of this stove, otherwise choose 6". Can be installed with a 5" twin wall chimney on the DEFRA version of this stove, otherwise choose 6".

We recommend using a 4" to 5" vitreous adaptor and using 5" vitreous pipe). If using twin wall flue pipe (insulated) and wish to take the twin wall all the way to the stove then use a 4-5" twin wall adaptor.

Top or rear connection

Air Gaps

Distance to combustibles SIDE: 400mm
Distance to combustibles REAR: 400mm (200mm with heatshield)

To non-combustibles there are no hard rules but, around the stove, a 50mm minimum air gap is recommended to brick/stone. This to be increased to 100mm for rendered or boarded surfaces. Prior to purchasing any stove download the installation manual to check that manufacturers do not have any additional requirements.
