About the Firewire

Three different sizes to fit every fireplace recess

During the winter of 2018/19 Stovefitter's went in search of a modern, large screen, Ecodesign stove that we could retail between £599 and £799. We tested numerous models and it was the Firewire range that you now see that came out on top. The Firewire is a wood-only stove with a large viewing window and simple yet effective single control.

When we tested the Firewire we were particularly impressed by how clear and clean the glass remained - like new after five full working-days of heating our office in North Wales. A cleaner glass during testing we have yet to find even amongst £1000+ models.

Firewire is only available from Stovefitter's - a range of high-quality products at a very reasonable price point.

Following our five weeks of testing (five days a week, eight hours per day) we are confident in our verdict: there is no finer stove at this price point on the market today. Arran (Stovefitter's Sales Manager) has just installed the Firewire in his new house in North Wales (he has been without fire for a while so is super excited). Due to this Arran is your man for a detailed analysis!

Note that the Firewire stoves require 40cm of hearth in front of the stove (big glass and high heat output).

Three stoves, all 5kW. Three widths to suit different fireplace dimensions.

400mm: Portrait
450mm: Landscape

Firewire Curve

The Fire wire Curve is also available. The Curve has a curved door (hence the name) and can be found here

Priced a little higher (£100) for the curved door (glass not curved, just door).

Ecodesign

This stove is certified as Ecodesign compliant (has passed the new and stringent 2022 regulations).

Defra-approved

This stove can burn wood in a Smoke Control Area (most towns and cities are Smoke Control Areas).

Julian's thoughts

There are a few stoves on the market worth buying at this price point and the Firewire is certainly fighting it out at the top of the list. An excellent stove.

Flue size

External air NO

No, this stove cannot be fitted with an external air kit. Usually this option is not relevant unless an air vent is required and the property owners are aiming for an airtight space.

Air vent advice here

Body and door

Steel stove (5-year body guarantee) with cast-iron door.

What to buy steel or cast-iron? Do not overthink. Steel heats fast. Cast-iron takes a little longer but retains heat longer as fire dies.

Hearth

Note that 400mm of hearth is required in front of the glass of this stove (as opposed to the usual 225mm as stated in Building regs)

This stove can, if sited outside of a fireplace recess, be sited on a 12mm thick hearth.

If in a fireplace recess, a full 125mm thickness constructional hearth is required. This will usually be in place as part of the recess design.

Air gaps

400 Model Distance to combustibles SIDE: 400mm
400 Model Distance to combustibles REAR: 250mm

450 Model Distance to combustibles SIDE: 400mm
450 Model Distance to combustibles REAR: 300mm

500 Model Distance to combustibles SIDE: 400mm
500 Model Distance to combustibles REAR: 250mm

To non-combustibles there are no hard rules but, around the stove, a 50mm minimum air gap is recommended to brick/stone. This to be increased to 100mm for rendered or boarded surfaces. Prior to purchasing any stove download the installation manual to check that manufacturers do not have any additional requirements.

Delivery promise (14 days to report any damage)

WHY YOU NEED OUR Exceptional guarantee (6-months even if stove used)

What if I get a lemon? What if I'm unhappy when I unwrap it? What if it does not agree with my chimney?

Chimney and stove not agreeing with each other? Although rare it really does happen and it is usually cured by swapping the stove for another. Why? Who knows? We have had a few stoves that "whistled". When we swapped the stove the problem stopped but when we put the stoves on a different chimney they do not whistle. We have had a few stoves that let smoke into the room when refuelling - swap the stove and the problem is cured. Test the stove on a different chimney and all is well.

Most retailers will not replace or refund if it is a problem with the chimney. You will have to sell your stove yourself (at a great loss as stove second-hand value is very poor) and purchase another.

If your stove's retail price is under £1500: Should you not be happy with your stove for any reason, within the first three months from purchase, we will arrange to have the stove collected from your premises (we pay first £48 delivery collection cost, covers most UK postcodes, you pay additional in rare situation cost rises above £48 for any reason). Stove installed and has been used? No worry. We will pay you up to £100 to have it removed by a Hetas registered installer.

As soon as the stove is back with us we will provide a FULL REFUND of the cost of the stove. We will even post you a pallet and straps as required (you will need to prepare it ready for our driver). This exceptional guarantee lasts for a full three months from date of delivery EVEN IF THE STOVE IS USED as long as normal wear and tear.

Between three and six months, we offer exactly the same but without the £100 stove-removal offer.

On this, you have my word.
