About the Salamander Hobbit Small Wood Burning Stove

So cute! The Salamander Hobbit small log burner is a traditional, petite cast-iron stove and probably the most famous small, multifuel stove on the market. During late 2015 the Hobbit was featured on George Clarke's Amazing Spaces, this causing a sales spike and a prolonged national Hobbit shortage. The small stove community still speak of this shortage today and many within that community are still having counselling today.

Salamander Stoves, in Devon, manufacture the small Hobbit stove (nice couple- Gillan and Mark, slightly eccentric but harmless). This one stove is pretty much all they do but they sell a lot. No wonder they know what they are doing. Niche marketing at its finest. A proper Hobbit obsession.
This is the perfect small wood burning stove for sheds, cabins, snugs, yurts, home offices, boats, caravans, vans, conservatories or any small room.
Hobbits are perfect for the smaller recess or the smaller room.
The Salamander Hobbit stove is a cast-iron classic and has long been a favourite amongst our customers. Over the years we have sold hundreds and we have very many happy customers.

Available with silver or brass fittings.
Standard or DEFRA-approved (for smoke control areas) versions available.
Requires you to also purchase a 4-5" vitreous adaptor to connect to a 5" stove pipe (see "Customers Who Bought This Also Bought"). This part does not come with our "Fitting Pack".

Hobbit Options

Eco credentials

The Salamander Hobbit stove is approved by DEFRA to burn wood in a Smoke Control Area (choose the DEFRA version).

Don't overthink efficiency. 75%-85% is fine.

Stoves with 90%+ efficiency may not work so well on shorter chimneys.

Height: 460mm
Height with log store: 618mm
Width: 300mm
Depth: 270mm
Front of pipe to rear of stove: 170mm

Which fitting pack for my liner? Advice here

Viewing area (from outside stove looking in).

Width: 15cm
Height: 18cm

Flue size

4" (125mm) collar top or rear.

Can be installed with a 5" or 6" chimney/chimney liner (if purchasing the non-DEFRA version then must be 6").

NOTE: This stove requires a 4" to 5" vitreous adaptor to enable the stove to be connected to 5" vitreous pipe. If rest of flue is to be 6" another adaptor from 5" to 6" will be required (adaptor type depends whether attaching to a liner or clip-together chimney system).

External air YES

Yes, the Hobbit stove can be fitted with an external air kit. Usually this option is not relevant unless an air vent is required and the property owners are aiming for an airtight space.

This is a factory-fitted option and a special order (approx. £250 extra). Please contact us for delivery timescales.

Body and door

Cast-iron stove (5-year body guarantee) with cast-iron door.

What to buy steel or cast-iron? Do not overthink. Steel heats fast. Cast-iron takes a little longer but retains heat longer as fire dies.

This stove can, if sited outside of a fireplace recess, be sited on a 12mm thick hearth.

If in a fireplace recess, a full 125mm thickness constructional hearth is required. This will usually be in place as part of the recess design.

Air gaps

Distance to combustibles SIDE: 400mm
Distance to combustibles REAR: 400mm
Distance to combustibles REAR WITH HEATSHIELD: ?mm

To non-combustibles there are no hard rules but, around the stove, a 50mm minimum air gap is recommended to brick/stone. This to be increased to 100mm for rendered or boarded surfaces. Prior to purchasing any stove download the installation manual to check that manufacturers do not have any additional requirements.

Buying online is a little disconcerting for some. What if I get a lemon? What if I'm happy when I unwrap it?
If your stove's retail price is under £1300: Should you not be happy with your stove for any reason, within the first three months from purchase, we will arrange to have the stove collected from your premises (we pay first £48 delivery collection cost, covers most UK postcodes, you pay additional in rare situation cost rises above £48 for any reason). Stove installed and has been used? No worry. We will pay you up to £100 to have it removed by a Hetas registered installer.
As soon as the stove is back with us we will provide a FULL REFUND of the cost of the stove. We will even post you a pallet and straps as required (you will need to prepare it ready for our driver). This exceptional guarantee lasts for a full three months from date of delivery EVEN IF THE STOVE IS USED as long as normal wear and tear.
Between three and six months, we offer exactly the same but without the £100 stove-removal offer.
On this, you have my word.
